MLK Jr. Day 2016, What’s Your Dream?; It’s Girl Scout Cookie Time

Here’s what’s happening today, Jan. 18, in the 914, according to Westchester Woman:

1.) Today is Martin Luther King Jr. Day. Today we celebrate the life and work of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. a civil rights leader who used?nonviolent civil disobedience as a?means of protest to fight racial discrimination until he was assassinated for his beliefs and efforts in 1968.

King, a Baptist minister, was the youngest man to ever receive the Nobel Peace prize in 1964; and lead 200,000 people in a march to the Lincoln Memorial?where gave his famous “I have a dream” speech, which is credited with helping to pass the Civil Rights Act, which bans discrimination based on race, color, religion, sex or national origin.

He also led the Montgomery Bus Boycott that lead the Supreme Court to rule that segregation on buses was illegal; and is credited with helping to end segregation in?parts of the South.?For more on King’s accomplishments visit?thekingcenter.org. 2.) It’s cookie?time people, as Girl Scout cookie season has officially begun in?Westchester folks!

When you buy Girl Scout cookies from your?daughter, niece or neighbor’s kid, you’re teaching them some big life lessons that they might not be learning in school, such as:

Proceeds from cookies goes directly to the local council and troops, or they can donate the money to a good cause or use it to fund a project to improve the local community.
