Lakeland Grad. Olympian Melissa Gonzalez Wins in Rio; Special Election Today in Yonkers, Mount Vernon

 

Here’s what’s happening Today in the 914, according to Westchester Woman:?Lakeland Grad Olympian Melissa Gonzalez Winning for U.S.; Special Election Today in Yonkers, Mount Vernon; MORE.

1.) We’ve got Olympic fever over here, and it’s because we’re just so darn excited to see strong, powerful women from Westchester making gains for the U.S. in Rio.

Lakeland High School graduate Melissa?Gonzalez is in Rio competing on the U.S. Women’s Field Hockey team. She also competed in the 2012 Olympics in London. The Mohegan Lake resident?spoke with Westchester Magazine from the Olympic Village and had this to say about her hometown:

“I absolutely think my journey would have been different had I lived somewhere else. I think in Westchester I was really fortunate to be brought up in a town where field hockey was really relevant. Coming from Lakeland specifically, I was really fortunate to have great coaches and my coach Sharon Sarsen. And I was always around the sport with my sisters, and she gave me a lot of opportunity to play, especially when I was younger.”

2.) Registered voters in Westchester’s 14th district, which serves parts of Mount Vernon and Yonkers, can vote in a special election today to fill a seat left vacant by 20-year County Legislator Republican Bernice Spreckman.

Republican David Tubiolo?and?Democrat Christine Peters will compete for the seat in today’s race. The polls are open from 6 a.m. to 9 p.m., you can find your polling place here.
