The First Twinkie Flavors
Twinkies have a rich history that dates back to the 1930s. Originally, Twinkies were filled with a banana cream filling. However, due to the shortage of bananas during World War II, the flavor was changed to vanilla, which remains the classic Twinkie filling to this day.
In 2012, Hostess filed for bankruptcy, causing Twinkies to disappear from store shelves. But fear not, Twinkie lovers! Apollo Global Management and Metropoulos & Co came to the rescue, acquiring Hostess and bringing our beloved snack back to life.
Key Lime Slime Twinkies
In collaboration with the Ghostbusters franchise, Hostess released a limited edition flavor known as Key Lime Slime Twinkies for the release of the 2016 “Ghostbusters” movie with the all-female cast. Inspired by the mischievous green ghost Slimer, these Twinkies are a true delight for fans of the paranormal and lovers of unique flavor combinations.
The vibrant green cream oozing out of the cake’s three holes may seem off-putting to some. But customers on Amazon said that they mostly just tasted like regular Twinkies with cream that was dyed green.
Pumpkin Spice Twinkies
One of the most popular and sought-after limited-edition Twinkie flavors is Pumpkin Spice. As the autumn season rolls around, people’s cravings for all things pumpkin kick into high gear. Hostess, always on top of the latest food trends, introduced Pumpkin Spice Twinkies to satisfy those seasonal cravings. These delightful treats feature a sponge cake infused with warm spices like cinnamon, nutmeg, and cloves, reminiscent of a freshly baked pumpkin pie.
Hostess Moonberry Twinkies
Continuing its tradition of unique flavors, Hostess introduced the Moonberry Twinkie. What is a moonberry you ask? Your guess is as good as ours. This limited edition delight features a dark blue-grey cake with a fruity filling that offers a hint of berry flavor.
Peppermint Twinkies
During the holiday season, Hostess introduces Peppermint Twinkies. These limited edition treats feature a red-dyed peppermint-flavored cake with the classic creamy filling. The festive red hue and refreshing peppermint flavor make these Twinkies a hit among holiday enthusiasts. We’re intrigued by how it’s legally possible to sell food this red. A single box is being sold on eBay for $73. They are listed on Amazon and Kroger’s websites as unavailable.
X-Men eXtreme Creme Twinkies
When you think of Marvel’s X-Men, what flavor comes to mind. This wasn’t obvious to us but Hostess decided it was strawberry and Blue Raspberry. The Strawberry Blast and Blue Raspberry Twinkies were offered as a promotion of the release of “X-Men Days of Future Past.”
Peanut Butter & Pickle Sandwich Twinkies
Hostess loves to surprise its fans with unexpected flavor combinations. That’s why it announced a Peanut Butter & Pickle Sandwich Twinkie. While some news organizations reported on the social media frenzy that surrounded the announcement, some left out the fact that they weren’t actually real. It was a joke and Hostess never actually released a Peanut Butter & Pickle Sandwich Twinkie.

This is one of our favorite on our list of Twinkie flavors. Hostess taps into the nostalgia of the carnival with its limited edition Cotton Candy Twinkies. The golden sponge cake is filled with a creamy cotton candy-flavored filling. While some reviewers have noted an artificial aftertaste, the vibrant pink filling adds a fun and whimsical touch to this Twinkie.
Orange Creme Pop Twinkies
The Hostess Orange Creme Pop Twinkie was offered as a limited edition Twinkie to celebrate summer. It came with golden sponge cake with an artificially flavored orange creme filling. While orange cream popsicles may be a summer treat, this Twinkie brings the flavor to a whole new level.

The Tropical Blast Twinkie was another limited-edition summer Twinkie. It came with the classic golden sponge cake and a bright teal-filled center that was “fruit flavored.”

Another holiday seasonal delight, Mint Chocolate Twinkies combine a green mint filling with a moist chocolate cake shell. This limited-edition flavor adds a refreshing twist to the classic Twinkie, making it a perfect treat for those who love the combination of mint and chocolate. Also, who knew how tight Twinkie’s pun game is.
Cherry Chocodile Twinkies
The Cherry Chocodile Twinkie is another unique flavor that combines the beloved chocolatey goodness of a Chocodile Twinkie (a chocolate-covered Twinkie) with a burst of cherry flavor in the center, creating a delightful and unexpected taste experience. This is also Twinkies, which comes with a lot of food coloring. They also came in “Fun Size” for whatever reason.
White Peppermint Twinkies
Hostess takes the holiday flavors up a notch with White Peppermint Twinkies. These limited-edition Twinkies feature a white chocolate-covered sponge cake with a peppermint-flavored cream filling with some red and white sprinkles on top. The festive colors and delightful peppermint taste make these Twinkies a must-try during the holiday season. They were, at one point, recalled due to salmonella contamination.
Pumpkin Spice Cheesecake Twinkie
Hostess decided to pump up its pumpkin spice offering a notch with this rare Twinkie flavor. The Pumpkin Spice Cheesecake Twinkie comes covered in white fudge and filled with a pumpkin cheesecake cream. This is one of the yummiest on our list of Twinkie flavors.
Red White and Blue Twinkies
Hostess also came out with a patriotic Twinkie. Their limited edition Red, White, & Blue Twinkies. They are basically regular Twinkies with red white and blue spots.

The Strawberry Creme Twinkies are a summer Twinkie offering. They are filled with artificially flavored strawberry creme.
Orange S’Cream Twinkies
This was one of Hostess’ Halloween Twinkies. They came with a scary-good bright orange cream filling. They also had a Chocolate Twinkie with S’cream filling, which came with a chocolate sponge cake filled with standard cream filling.
Deep Fried Twinkies
One of the most indulgent and mouthwatering flavors on the rare Twinkie spectrum is the Deep Fried Twinkies that came in an original and a banana flavor. This unique twist takes the classic Twinkie and coats it in a crispy, golden batter reminiscent of fairground delicacies. The combination of the fluffy sponge cake and the warm, caramelized banana filling creates a truly decadent treat. These were meant to be eaten after being warmed in the oven.
Chocolate Peanut Butter Twinkies
For chocolate and peanut butter enthusiasts, the chocolate peanut butter Twinkie is a dream come true. This flavor combines the rich, velvety taste of chocolate with the creamy, nutty goodness of peanut butter. Each bite is a harmonious blend of sweet and savory, satisfying even the most discerning palate.
Mixed Berry Twinkies
If you’re a fan of fruity flavors, the mixed berry Twinkie is sure to delight. This vibrant variation features a golden sponge cake filled with a luscious blend of real strawberry, blueberry, and raspberry cream. With each bite, you’ll experience a burst of fruity freshness that perfectly complements the lightness of the cake.
