Westchester Throwback Thursday #TBT – That Time When Westchester Had a Trolley System [VIDEO]

In this week’s?Westchester Throwback Thursday #TBT: That Time When Westchester Had a Trolley System?

Imagine if Westchester looked like San Francisco with streetcars,?and you took a trolley to work instead of the Bee-Line? Once upon a time it did!
Once a horse-car line, the Third Avenue Railway System (TARS) was established in 1852 and started a system of trollies?that serviced Manhattan, Bronx, Westchester and Long Island.
Streetcars were eventually phased out for buses and the Yonkers lines were the last to run before being shut down in 1952, according to Wikipedia.
The video above outlines TARS’ trolley operations in New Rochelle, Mount Vernon and Yonkers. Westchester Counties streetcar lines also ran through Eastchester, Pelham, White Plains and Tuckahoe.

The Yonkers Trolley Barn, which is listed on the National Register of Historic Places, is the last standing structure in Westchester that is evidence of the county’s extinct streetcar?lines. It is currently home to?Yonkers Brewing Co.
