Here’s what Selena Gomez did to heal herself mentally and physically

Selena Gomez made headlines this August when she cancelled her Revival World Tour due to anxiety and depression. But it seems the three-month hiatus has taught the 24-year-old some valuable lessons. Gomez talked to Thrive Global on November 30 about the importance of taking care of yourself.

1.)?Hydrate yo’self – Making sure you drink enough water isn’t only good for your skin, hair and nails and overall health (it carries nutrients to your body, flushes out toxins, etc.) it also improves your mental health by improving memory and warding off fatigue.

2.) Get off your damn phone – Most of us can say we are ALL guilty of being addicted to our cell phones at some point, but staring at those little illuminated screens all day can affect your well-being. The constant influx of data and information can cause stress, weaken your immune system and can even negatively affect your relationships.

Try deleting certain apps from your phone, like Facebook, to prevent yourself from constantly checking our phone. Gomez took a three-month hiatus from using her phone, and while all us of might not have that luxury there are things we can do to minimize?overuse.

3.)?Don’t be a slave to your email?– Many of us need email for work but do you find yourself constantly checking it for no reason? Try and set certain times of day for checking your email and stick to it. Gomez said she picked up the phone and made some phone calls instead of responding with email. Again, not everyone can just ditch their email, but again, there are things that can be done to use it less.

4.)?Carve out some YOU time -?Find time throughout the day (even if it’s 10 or 15 minutes) or set aside a block of time each day that is just for you to take care of you. Whether you detach from electronics or take a step back from your responsibilities, just enjoy that time for you. Take time to observe yourself and how you feel.

Gomez says she spends her YOU-time practicing self-affirmations and saying nice and empowering things to herself, or she spends it doing things she enjoys like cooking. Other times her YOU-time is also naptime.

5.) Stay up by looking forward -?If the present moment isn’t going so great always know that there is tomorrow and you have the power to change things for the better.

2.) In 2015, USA Today reported that that the criminal justice system failed hundreds of thousands of victims who were raped after 700,000?rape kits went untested. Thanks to a new bill signed into law by Gov. Andrew Cuomo victims in New York will at least have some piece of mind that their assailants may be caught. The law will take effect within three months.

New NY law requires timely rape-kit testing

(Photo: CARLOS ORTIZ) ALBANY – Thousands of sexual assault evidence kits that have gone untested across New York will be sent for forensic testing under a bill signed into law by Gov. Andrew Cuomo this week.

According to lohud, New York police agencies must immediately report how many untested kits they have and report it to the state. After one year, they’ll have threes months to send it in for testing.?New rape kits will be sent for testing?within 10 days. The labs will be required to test the kit, submit perpetrator profiles to a national database and return the results within 90 days.

Prior to the new law, police weren’t required to test rape kits outside of New York City.

“When tested, DNA evidence contained by rape kits can be an incredibly powerful tool to solve and prevent crime. It can identify an unknown assailant and confirm the presence of a known suspect. It can affirm the survivor’s account of the attack and discredit the suspect. It can connect the suspect to other crime scenes and identify serial offenders. It can exonerate the wrongly convicted or accused.” – EndtheBacklog.org

According to End the Backlog, when Detroit took the initiative to test all 11,341 backlogged kits 2,616 DNA matches were made that identified 770 potential serial rapists who committed crimes in 40 states.
