Here’s what’s happening Today in the 914, according to Westchester Woman:

1.) There once was a time where women couldn’t vote. But Westchester women and others around the country fought and won that right for women in the U.S.

Even with the ability to vote,?women still lived in a world where you needed a man to get a credit card; where some employers would only hire men; where women didn’t have a right to end an unwanted pregnancy in a safe and legal way; and sexual harassment was the norm, even the workplace.

So, Westchester women and?organizations like the National Organization for Women (NOW) continued their fight to change that. While women still have a ways to go when it comes to things like?pay equity, Westchester woman are still achieving gains for fellow females, such as New York’s recent passage of Paid Family Leave.

It’s easy to forget the struggle women had and take our modern day freedoms for granted, but we’d like express our gratitude to?the women who have paved the way for other women and girls so they can?navigate the world safely and achieve success. Especially, the women who fought and still fight in Westchester.

We are grateful to NOW, who is celebrating 50 years of work and other women for fighting for us for?decades. Thank you!

2.) Swale is a floating food forest that aims to turn food from an expensive commodity into a free public service. Swale will invite the public to climb aboard and pick fresh fruit and vegetables from their forest for free on Saturday when it docks?at Concrete Plant Park, 1324 Westchester Ave. in the Bronx between 12 p.m. and 7 p.m.

Swale will dock at various spots in NYC and even in New Rochelle this summer. But they need your help!?Swale is looking for volunteers. Here are the details:

Those interested in volunteering can email?swaleproject@gmail.com. If you can’t volunteer you can still help Swale stay strong so they can continue the project around the city and throughout the Hudson Valley. Donate a fruit tree or some soil, and learn more about the project at?swaleny.org.?
