Fill Westchester Diaper Bank For Diaper Awareness Week – Dry Diapers For All Westchester Babies
Dina Sciortino
The Westchester County Diaper Bank is raising awareness and asking for donations to ensure that all Westchester babies have clean and dry diapers during Diaper Awareness Week (Sept. 28-Oct. 4).
One in three mothers in the U.S. say they struggle with having an adequate diaper supply for their babies, according to National Diaper Bank Network (NDBN). The NDBN, which was started by Huggies,?has started a movement to encourage local communities to open diaper banks around the country since government programs, like WIC, don’t provide diapers.
Here is one mother’s account of her struggle to put diapers on her children:
The NDBN says that diaper need can impact the physical, mental and economic well-being of children and their parents.
The Westchester County Diaper Bank was started in November 2014. The Junior League of Central Westchester is responsible for organizing drives and managing its inventory while the Westchester County Department of Social Services help to distribute diapers to local families.
According to the Junior League of Central Westchester’s website, wearing soiled diapers for too long can:
lead to infections
emotional discomfort
diminished bonding time
missing work, daycare or early education programs
financial stress
County Executive Rob Astorino declared iDiaper Need Awareness Week in Westchester on Monday and presented the??Junior League of Central Westchester (JLCW)?with a proclamation.
“Since we opened the Westchester County Diaper Bank last November, we’ve distributed an average of 15,800 diapers each month to needy families,”said ?Astorino
“It is thanks entirely to donations that the Diaper Bank is able to reach so many people. Every single donation really does matter. And with every donation, you are helping to keep a baby clean, healthy and happy.”
