Nathan’s Famous has sold hot dogs on the Coney Island boardwalk for 100 years. In celebration of their centennial, fans can enjoy up to two hot dogs for $.05 cents each on Saturday, May 28 from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at their original location.
Nathan Handwerker, a Polish immigrant, opened up his restaurant on May 27, 1916 at Surf & Stillwell in Coney Island and sold hot dogs based on his wife’s recipe for $.05 cents each. Hot dogs now cost $4.25 each. Over the years, Nathan’s gained popularity with visits from gangster Al Capone, free beer to celebrate the end of prohibition, and of course their hot dog eating contest.
Nathan’s Famous opened its third location in Yonkers in 1965, which is now closed.
