Here’s what’s happening today in the 914:
1.) Today is the International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women. According to National Day Calendar, the day was designated by the United Nations General Assembly since one in three (or about 35%) of women around the word have experienced physical or sexual violence (most of which was caused by an intimate partner).

Today marks the start of 15 days of activism, raising awareness, encouraging education, intervention and prevention that ends?on Dec. 10, which is Human Rights Day.
The UNiTE campaign encourages people to wear orange today to symbolize a bright future without violence and raise awareness. You can also learn more about local organizations that help women who experience violence and/or make a donation to these organizations like Hope’s Door or My Sister’s Place.

2.) Thornwood’s License 2 Grill needs your help!?The restaurant, located at 803 Commerce St., is up for the?Indie Award’s “Small Independent Business of the Year,” and they need your vote to win. Here’s what their nomination page says:
“The current owner operators of License 2 Grill has gone above and beyond to answer the needs of the community. The menu is unique, providing something for everyone. They work very hard to stay current with trends in the food industry. Serving the food that busy families wish they had the time to prepare at home, they have answered a need. They have added an activity center to entertain kids while they wait for their meal. It is easy to see why this establishment deserves to be recognized for their efforts to bring fresh American food to the neighborhood.”
